HALL OF FAME SPOTLIGHT: Anna Carmichael '16
Anna Carmichael, who came to Goucher from Colorado Springs, Colorado, was a four-year standout for the Gopher equestrian team. Anna was the IHSA national champion and Zone IV champion in Novice Fences as a sophomore in 2014 as she helped the Gophers to a sixth-place finish at nationals. As a junior Carmichael was the Reserve Zone Champion and placed fifth at nationals in Novice Flat, while as a senior she repeated as Reserve Zone Champion in Novice Flat to earn her third nationals trip. As a team Goucher qualified for nationals in each of her four seasons and captured four Zone IV, Region I championships.
Carmichael and the Goucher Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2023 will be inducted on Friday, October 20 at 6 pm at Hyman Forum at the Sanford J. Ungar Athenaeum. We will be spotlighting each member as well as the 2013 equestrian team, this year's Team of Distinction, throughout the week.
How did you react when you learned that you had been selected to the Goucher Athletics Hall of Fame?
I was very surprised, especially at how Andrew (Wu) told me! We were in front of a lot of people, so that was a memorable moment. I'm grateful to be in incredible company and very honored.
What are some of your top memories of your Goucher career, both on and off the field?
Winning a national championship, I feel like I remember every part of that ride. The bus ride back from Zone in 2014 – our first Zone championship. ANRC in 2014, being able to have a weekend that successful after our community had just gone through tragedy.
Off the field – so much time with my teammates. They became my absolute best friends and still are today.
Who are people who had an influence on you during your time at Goucher?
My coaches – Jen, Patte and Britt, my professors – Lydia Harris, Gina Shamshak, Kelly Brown Douglas, and Anne Duncan in particular.
What will it mean to be back on campus?
I am really excited to see my teammates, go down to the barn, show my family and friends around our old stomping grounds. It is going to mean a lot!
What advice would you give to current Goucher student athletes?
Four years goes by so quickly! Try not to take the time for granted, give yourself semester-long and year-long goals to grow, and weekly goals to stay in the moment. Make the most of the resources you get at Goucher because after graduation, you won't have a lot of that!
What are you doing now?
After seven years in political organizing and data, I am in my first year of my MBA at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business.
