LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior Cary Hundley (Ellicott City, Md.) earned the High Collegiate Medal as the Gophers finished sixth at the Tournament of Champions Preseason Classic held at Randolph College on Saturday.
Hundley is only the second rider in school history to earn the prestigious award behind only Joey Fink '15, who earned the honor in 2013. Hundley represented the Gophers in a competition among the top riders from 15 different programs in the open division. The competition was broken down into three phases. Following the first round on the flat, the field was reduced to eight. Hundley was then selected as the top rider in the round.
Sarah Lummis '17 earned the Low Collegiate Medal in 2016 for the Gophers.
Hundley also placed second in the open flat and third in the open fences for the Gophers. Senior Clea Lerner (Los Angeles, Calif.) placed fifth in the intermediate fences and ninth in the Collegiate Low Medal competition. Sophomore Rena DiPaula (Westminster, Md.) took third in the novice fences while fellow sophomore Courtney Sloan (Annandale, Va.) took third in novice flat.
Junior Wren Wakemen (Addison, Maine) added a third-place finish in the walk trot canter while sophomore Cherise Madrid (Braintree, Mass.) took fourth in the walk trot.
The Gophers return to the ring on October 7th when they participate in the Mt. St. Mary's IHSA Show on Goucher College's campus.
