Bucci Scores Twice, Gophers Down Sewanee in Season Opener

TOWSON, Md. - Junior transfer Kaitlyn Bucci scored twice in her Goucher College debut as the Gophers' field hockey team downed Sewanee 3-1 Friday evening in the season opener for both schools at Beldon Field.
- Just under two minutes into the game, Goucher's (1-0) Zoe Mikles rang a shot off the post.
- The Gophers defender a Sewanee (0-1) penalty corner in the game's fifth minute.
- Just past the five-minute mark, Bucci took a ball near midfield, dribbled around a defender and blasted a backhanded shot from the top of the circle to put the hosts in front 1-0.
- Bucci made it 2-0 with 3:55 left in the frame as she delivered a low liner from just inside the arc for her second of the game.
- Bucci had another shot that was knocked away by a Tiger defender moments into the second quarter.
- Goucher first year goalie Katie Bloom made a save in the 20th minute.
- The Gophers took a 2-0 lead into intermission.
- Goucher generated three penalty corners in the first four minutes of the second half.
- Just over five minutes into the quarter, Mikles registered her first goal of the season, with Isa Schenk registering an assist.
- Schenk put in a pass from the top of the circle that Mikles collected, spun, and backhanded a shot past Sewanee goalie Claire Damare.
- Sewanee had a penalty corner with just under a minute left but came up empty.
- Bloom made a save on a Sewanee bid just over a minute into the fourth.
- Goucher had back-to-back corners with 12 minutes left.
- In the 56th minute, Goucher's Camden West recorded a defensive save on a shot by Margaret Starkey.
- Sewanee converted a penalty stroke with 3:19 remaining to get on the board.
- Sewanee outshot Goucher 15-9 and had a 10-7 edge in penalty corners.
- Bloom made seven saves in her Gopher debut in goal, while the Tigers had two saves.
