Harris Leads the Gophers in Scoring Once Again
KINGS POINT, N.Y. — For the second time since joining the Landmark Conference, Goucher men's basketball is 1-0 in conference.
Not since Goucher (2-4, 1-0 Landmark) defeated Catholic in the premiere game of the Landmark Conference has the team won its opener until tonight.
Richard Harris (Clinton, Md./Surrattsville) again paced the Gophers in scoring with a game-high 18. Harris has been the top scorer for Goucher in each of his four games this season.
Also in double-figures was Alex Noble (Clinton, Md./Surrattsville). The sophomore was extremely efficient on the offensive side of the court, knocking down 5-of-6 from the floor and from the free throw line. He had 12 in the first half and finished with 16.
Merchant Marine (2-2, 0-1 Landmark) led for a total of 59 seconds, just taking the lead once at 3-2 before the Gophers took control. Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) pulled down an offensive rebound and put it back to give Goucher the lead it would never again relinquish.
After extending the lead to 20-9, the Mariners scored eight straight to bring the game back to within a single possession, but Goucher responded with the next 10 points to help get to intermission up by double figures.
Out of the break, the Gophers kept up the pressure, earning a lead as large as 19 at one point.
The hosts responded, eventually getting back within five, but the comeback attempt fell short as Dylan Chaney (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake), Lindsay and Noble knocked down key free throws to ice the game. Overall, the Gophers took 18 more free throws than the Mariners, hitting 17 of 27 from the stripe.
On the defensive end, the Gophers held the Mariners to 31.3% shooting, 10% lower than their previous worst shooting output of the year.
