Gonzalez Finishes Ninth To Lead Goucher Men's Golf To Fourth At Inaugural Spartans Invitational
YORK, Pa. – Julian Gonzalez (Heredia, Costa Rica/Berkeley Academy) finished ninth to lead the Goucher College men's golf tea to fourth place at the Inaugural Spartans Invitational on Sunday.
After shooting a 75 in the opening round, Gonzalez shot a 77 in the final round to finish with a two-round score of 152, nine strokes behind the medalist. The sophomore had birdies on No. 3 and 15, bogeys on No. 8, 9, 10, 13 and 14 and a double bogey on 17. Gonzalez shot a one-over 37 on the front nine, but finished with a four-over 40 on the back nine.
Evan Yue (Beijing, China/IMG Academy) finished in 13th place and one stroke behind Gonzalez with a 153 after carding a 75 in the opening round and a 78 in the second round. Yue registered birdies on his first and last hole of the afternoon while adding bogeys on No. 2, 5, 11, 15 and 17, and a triple bogey on No. 3.
Steph Lee (Manalapan, N.J./Saint John Vianney) (23rd place, 155), Nick Fisher (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) (28th place, 157) and Roberto Mikse (Fort Worth, Texas/Jim McClean Junior Academy) (55th place, 166) rounded out the Gophers five competitors. Lee registered a team-high four birdies on the day on holes No. 6, 7, 9 and 17, but also added eight bogeys. Fisher had birdies on No. 9 and 16.
Stevenson rallied from a 12-stroke margin to win the event with a two-round score of 606, two strokes ahead of York (608) while Gettysburg (615), Goucher (616) and Rosemont (618) rounded out the Top-5 teams in the 15-team field. The Gophers posted a 301 in the opening round to go into the final round with the lead, but posted a 315 on Sunday to drop to fourth place after posting the ninth-best round of the day.
Miguel Reider (Mexico City, Mexico/Tecnológico de Monterrey) finished 39th as an individual in his collegiate debut after posting an 81 in the opening round and a 79 in the final round for a two-round score of 160.
Goucher returns to action at the Don Scalf Invitational on Sept. 22.
