Roach Puts Goucher Ahead Three Times with First-Half Goals
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher has enjoyed a fair amount of success against teams from the Capital Athletic Conference since leaving that league to join the Landmark Conference following the 2006-07 season. Heading into today's game against Mary Washington, the Gophers were 5-2 against CAC teams since the switch, which includes three wins in four tries against the Eagles.
Today on Beldon Field, however, the Eagles helped the CAC narrow the gap a bit by downing the Gophers, 13-6.
Max Roach (Austin, Texas/Austin) accounted for each of Goucher's first three goals as he put the Gophers (1-6) ahead 1-0 just 2:30 into the contest, 2-1 later in the opening quarter and finally 3-2 in the early stages of the second period. After the junior attackman's third goal, however, they wouldn't score again until more than six minutes had elapsed in the fourth quarter.
The Eagles (4-1) tallied the final three goals of the second period to assume a 5-3 lead after 30 minutes and then tacked on the first seven goals of the second half, opening up a commanding 12-3 advantage on a goal by Luke Dick with 11:31 left to play.
Owen Demmerly (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) ended Goucher's scoring drought that had reached nearly 35 minutes when he stuck an even-strength goal with 8:57 remaining to make the score 12-4. Mike Russo (Frederick, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) and Steve Patterson (Minneapolis, Minn./Blake School) also produced unassisted goals for the Gophers, who have now lost six consecutive games since a season-opening 13-9 triumph over Birmingham-Southern, in the fourth quarter.
Goucher finished with a slim 38-36 edge in shots, but that advantage was offset by the performance of Zack DelGrosso, who went the distance in goal for Mary Washington and made 17 saves.
Tristan Morris (Houston, Texas/Houston Christian) won 15 of the 23 faceoffs he handled for Goucher and also was credited with a game-high total of eight ground balls. In addition to scoring the final goal of the contest, Patterson supplied the Gophers with seven ground balls and led all players with four caused turnovers.
