LANGHORNE, Pa. - Host Cairn opened a 3-1 lead at the half and never looked back, as they knocked off the Goucher College men's soccer team, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon.
With the defeat, Goucher dropped to 0-2-1 overall for the year, while Cairn evened their record to 1-1 with the victory.
In the loss, Goucher fell behind 2-0 in the first eight minutes of regulation to the host Highlanders.
But, in the 17th minute, the Gophers were able to slice the Cairn lead in half as junior Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach, Calif.) scored off an assist from senior Jake Guinn (Spring Grove, Pa.) to make it a 2-1 match. The assist for Guinn was the first of his career, as well.
Cairn, however, answered the score later in the half, tallying their third goal of the first period in the 33rd minute to take a 3-1 lead into intermission.
That two-score lead held over the majority of the half, until the 73rd minute when Cairn put the match away with their fourth goal of the afternoon to take an insurmountable 4-1 lead. Cohen added another goal in the 88th minute for Goucher, but it was too little, too late for the Gophers, as Cairn took the match by two scores.
Overall, Goucher held an 18-14 edge in total shots in the defeat, outshooting Cairn by an 8-7 margin in the first half, and a 10-7 ledger in the second. The Gophers also held a 9-5 edge on corner kicks. With his two-goal performance, Cohen has now scored three goals in the last two matches for the Gophers, as well.
The Goucher College men's soccer team has a quick turnaround for their next match, as they'll travel to Rosemont on Friday evening. Things get underway at 7 p.m.
