HUNTINGDON, Pa. - First-year Nick Sickler (Towson, Md.) scored the golden goal for the Goucher College men's soccer team on Saturday at Juniata, completing a second half comeback for the Gophers in a 3-2 Landmark Conference win on the road.
With the victory, Goucher moved to 3-8-1 overall and 1-2 in the Landmark Conference, while Juniata fell to 4-7-1 and 0-3 in the Landmark with the defeat.
In the opening half of the contest, Juniata struck quickly, scoring the game's first goal one minute and 30 seconds into the contest to go up, 1-0, on Goucher.
The Gophers, however, bounced back in the 19th minute, as first-year Drew List (Towson, Md.) scored the equalizer off an assist from fellow first-year Jack Tchantchuing-Ngoko (Silver Spring, Md.) to make it a 1-1 score. But, Juniata ended the half strong, scoring another goal in the 39th minute to take a 2-1 lead into intermission.
Down 2-1 entering the second half, the Gophers were relentless on offense in the second half, firing 14 shots, seven of which were on net.
But, it was not until the 69th minute that Goucher finally found the equalizer to tie the match back up at 2-all. There, junior Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach, Calif.) scored off an assist from List, as Cohen's sixth goal of the season knotted things up at 2-2 with 21 minutes left.
Finally, in the 82nd minute, Sickler lifted Goucher to the win, scoring a goal off a Tchantchuing-Ngoko assist. The goal, which was the second of Sickler's season, was also the first game-winner of the midfielder's career at Goucher, as well.
Overall in the win, Goucher outshot Juniata, 17-8, while holding a 7-2 edge on corner kicks. In net, senior Daniel Hendry (Lewisburg, Pa.) made two saves in the second half to keep Juniata scoreless in the final 45 minutes of regulation.
The Goucher College men's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, as they host Rosemont in a non-conference match at Beldon Field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
