Cohen's Two Goals In Second Half Lifts Goucher Men's Soccer Past Cairn, 3-1
BALTIMORE, Md. – Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) scored twice in the second half to propel Goucher College past Cairn University 2-1 in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday.
Leading 1-0 and the goalkeeper out of position, Jack Topper (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) passed the ball from the right to left to Cohen and then Cohen drilled the ball into the netting at the 66:30 mark for the eventual game-winning tally. Cohen then put the game away in the final 45 seconds of the match when he took a pass from the Xavier Dever (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) in the defensive end and battled with a defender for the ball and got ahead and beat the goalkeeper 1-on-1 to seal the victory.
Cohen notched his first two markers of the season and now has 22 career goals and 10 assists for 54 points.
Dever got the scoring started after Sam Spencer (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) got the ball in and off the goalkeeper before Dever knocked in the shot for his first career goal at the 11:42 mark for a 1-0 edge.
It was Dever's first career score while Topper notched his first collegiate point on his assist on Cohen's first tally. Spencer now has two assists in his career.
Joe May (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell) made his collegiate debut in between the pipes and made seven saves in the winning effort. A save that was not recorded for May was a penalty kick he turned away by the Highlanders in the 59th minute.
Goucher returns to action on Saturday in the final game of a Beldon Field tripleheader with the Gophers field hockey and women's soccer team. The men's soccer team will host Rosemont at 5 p.m. to conclude the afternoon.
