Zach Attack Helps Goucher Men's Soccer Open League Play With A 2-All Standstill Against Drew
MADISON, N.J. – It was a Zach Attack for Goucher College, but in the end the Gophers had a LaFaver for one more goal in a 2-all standstill against Drew University in the Landmark Conference men's soccer opener for both teams on Saturday.
Zach Brumbalow (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) notched his first goal of the season and third of his career when he tipped the ball into the netting off a cross from left to right off the foot of Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) at the 38:21 mark for a 1-0 lead.
Zach LaFaver (Hanover, Md./South Western) booted in a penalty kick with at the 51:48 mark to give Goucher a two-goal lead. LaFaver now has three goals and two assists for eight points in his career.
Joe May (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell) made a career-high 11 saves for the Gophers, who start out the conference slate with a tie for the second time in conference history and the first since 2017.
After the Rangers tied the game, Goucher had three shots the rest of the way. Cohen had his shot stopped in the 89th minute and Isaiah Perry (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) missed high with 16 seconds left in regulation. Xavier Dever (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) had the team's final scoring chance, but his shot was stopped in the 101st minute.
May registered six of his saves after Drew tied the match including two stops in the first overtime and one in the second extra session. The Rangers also had a shot blocked and two shots go high in the final 42 minutes of the match.
Goucher returns to the pitch at Hood on Tuesday. Match time is 7 p.m.
NOTE: Zach Attack is a reference to the "Saved By The Bell" episode where Zach Morris dreams that his band makes it big with the song "Friends Forever" that aired on NBC on Nov. 30, 1991. The fever for more goals is a take on an April 8, 2000 "Saturday Night Live" skit about the Blue Oyster Cult needing more cowbell in its song "The Reaper.
