Cardinals Power Past Gophers in Second Half

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Goucher College staked itself to a 1-0 lead in the game's 33rd minute, but league-leading Catholic University tied the game 1-1 2:33 before halftime and scored three times in the second half to post a 4-1 Landmark Conference men's soccer victory Wednesday night at Carlini Field.
- Goucher (5-9-2, 1-4 Landmark) took two shots in the game's first minute, including a shot by Bobby Beringer (Okinawa, Japan / Richard Montgomery) that was saved.
- Catholic (7-5-2, 3-1-1) put its first shot on goal in the 12th minute that was saved by Jeff Castro (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township).
- Xavier Dever (Hollywood, Md. / Leonardtown) had a shot blocked just shy of the 17-minute mark.
- Just past the 32-minute mark, Aidan Spoor (Milton, Del. / Cape Henlopen) gave the Gophers a 1-0 lead with his header off of a corner kick.
- Just over three minutes later, Dever's bid to make it 2-0 was saved by Cardinal goalie Austin Coron.
- Jeremiah Odubade (Capital Heights, Md. / Fairmont Heights) had a shot at the 40-minute mark saves by Coron.
- Catholic tied the game on a Lorenzo Carletti tally in the 43rd minute.
- Castro made three saves in the final two minutes of the half to keep the game tied 1-1.
- Catholic scored twice in a span of 3:01 to take a 3-1 lead.
- In the 56th minute, Jacob Rocha scored his first goal of the year to make it 2-1.
- At the 58:42 mark, Ryan Kelly scored to make it a 3-1 game.
- Odubade put a shot on frame with just over 13 minutes left that was corralled by Coron.
- With just under 10 minutes left, JP Koshakji put home a rebound of an initial Catholic shot that rang off the crossbar.
- Goucher had four shots in the final 10 minutes, with one on goal that was turned aside.
- Catholic held a 19-12 shot advantage on the evening, including 11-6 in the second half.
- Both teams took seven corner kicks.
- Castro made four saves, while Coron made four saves in the first 80:48 before giving way to James Pickeral, who made one save.
- Odobade led the Gophers with four shots.
- Goucher returns to action Saturday, hosting Juniata in a 4 pm contest at Beldon Field.
