Gophers Battle to 3-3 Tie with Cairn in Opener

TOWSON, Md. - Goucher College and Cairn University battled to a 3-3 tie in non-conference men's soccer Thursday afternoon at Beldon Field. Per new NCAA overtime regulations, overtime will not be played in regular season matches this season.
- Cairn (0-0-1) put three shots on goal in the first 20-plus minutes of the first half, but all three were stopped by Goucher (0-0-1) keeper Jeff Castro (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township).
- Bobby Beringer (Okinawa, Japan/Richard Montgomery) had the first Gopher shot on goal just past the 20-minute mark.
- Abou Makine (Baltimore, Md./Patterson) got Goucher on the board with just over five minutes left in the first half, dribbling around Cairn keeper Chris Eelman and scoring to make it 1-0.
- The Gophers carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.
- Beringer and Jeremiah Odubade (Capital Heights, Md./Fairmont Heights) each put shots on frame just past the 50-minute mark.
- Cairn tied the game 1-1 on a goal by Josh Goodyear just past the 58-minute mark.
- After back-to-back shots on goal just past the 60-minute mark, Goucher reclaimed the lead on a Beringer tally at 60:57. Isaiah Perry (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) assisted on the tally.
- 1:29 later, Yaya Diabagate (Hyattsville, Md./International HS at Langley Park) made it 3-1 off a corner kick with Ali Kazim Nakhid (Beirut, Lebanon/UMBC) Will Frasier (Hereford, Md./Hereford) assisting.
- In the 75th minute, Moses Beers converted a penalty kick to cut the Gopher lead to 3-2.
- Goucher put a pair of shots on goal with just over six minutes left but both were turned aside.
- The Highlanders pulled even on a Tyler Skaer goal in the 85th minute.
- Cairn had a shot and a corner kick in the game's waning moments.
- Goucher outshot Cairn 20-13. Both teams took six corner kicks.
- Castro made five saves for the Gophers, while Eelman made seven stops for Cairn.
- Beringer led the Gophers with five shots.
- Goucher picked up its first point in a season opener since 2018.
- Goucher returns to action at home Saturday, hosting Pitt-Greensburg in a 4 pm contest at Beldon Field.
