McDonald Touches First in Two Events, Runner-Up in 500 FreeJan. 26, 2008
TOWSON, Md. - Goucher produced the first-place performances in six of the 12 individual events this afternoon, but the Gophers were outscored 22-4 in the two relays as they suffered a 115-96 setback to Arcadia in their final dual meet of the 2007-08 season.
The Gophers (1-9) didn't have an entry in the 200-yard medley relay, immediately putting them in an 11-0 hole. But starting with a victory by Mac McDonald (New Port Richey, FL/Avon Old Farms) in the 1,000-yard freestyle, Goucher swimmers took first place in three of the next four events, knocking the Knights' lead down to 39-33 after five events.
McDonald completed the 1000 free in 12:44.98 and his first-place effort was separated by just one event from back-to-back wins by Michael Ambrosio (Port Washington, NY/Paul D. Schreiber) in the 200 free (2:05.96) and Sasha Verin (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.19).
McDonald also touched first in the 100 butterfly as he posted a time of 1:02.00, plus he was runner-up in the 500 free (5:57.68). Goucher's other victories were by Devin Myles (Turner, ME/Leavitt Area) in the 200 breast (2:50.54) and Michael Polonchak (Harpers Ferry, WV) in the 200 individual medley (2:26.03).
