KINGS POINT, N.Y. - Five wins in singles play and two during the doubles competition added up nicely for Goucher this afternoon - a 7-2 Landmark Conference victory over Merchant Marine.
The two wins in doubles play came at No. 1 from Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, NY/Solomon Schechter) and Steve Baum (Fallston, MD/Fallston) and at No. 3 from Billie Weiss (Lutherville, MD/Dulaney) and Michael Simon (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto). Brooks and Baum posted an 8-3 victory over Geoffrey Lerner and Cesar Henriquez; Weiss and Simon were 8-2 winners over Andrew Denning and Algernon Voltz.
Those four players, along with Chris Covey (Exeter, NH/Exeter) were also victorious in their singles matches for Goucher (2-3, 1-1 Landmark). Brooks knocked off Lerner 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 and Covey defeated Henriquez 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2. Baum, competing at No. 3 for the Gophers, polished off Billy Coulter 6-4, 6-0.
The Mariners (0-3, 0-2 Landmark) picked up their only singles win at No. 4 where Neal Duncan needed three sets to finish off Francisco Barrera (Wheaton, MD/Wheaton) 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Weiss defeated Denning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 and Simon recorded a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Jeffrey Fasoli at No. 6.
