TOWSON, Md. - Goucher took two hits today, one from Juniata in a Landmark Conference match and the second from a non-conference opponent.
The Gophers came out of doubles play against the Eagles (3-7, 1-2 Landmark) trailing by only 2-1, but only Michael Simon (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) was victorious in singles play for head coach Michael Vann's squad. Simon raised his record at No. 6 singles to 3-0 by downing Casey Chew 6-3, 6-2.
Two of Simon's teammates did win the first set of their singles matches: at No. 1, Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, NY/Solomon Schechter) lost to Jarrad Silver 5-7, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (7); at No. 3, Steve Baum (Fallston, MD/Fallston) was beaten by Ryan Navarro 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2), 1-0 (7).
A match against Muhlenberg followed the 7-2 loss to Juniata and the Mules (4-3) jumped in front by sweeping the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Brian Wernick and Jonathan Farber registered a 9-7 victory over Baum and Brooks.
The Gophers secured their lone point of the match at first singles where Chris Covey (Exeter, NH/Exeter) defeated Wernick 6-3, 6-1.
The Gophers (2-5, 1-2 Landmark) were originally scheduled to play four matches in a span of approximately 48 hours, but Friday's match against Gettysburg was postponed. Their busy weekend concludes Sunday with a match against St. Mary's (Md.).
