TOWSON, Md. - Thanks to Michael Simon (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto), Goucher came away from today's match against nationally ranked Salisbury with a point. The senior's 7-5, 6-3 triumph over Matt Copeland at No. 6 singles was the highlight for the Gophers in an 8-1 loss to the Sea Gulls.
The victory was Simon's team-leading eighth in singles play this season and improves his record at sixth singles to 8-0.
In the remaining five singles matches, the Gophers (4-13) were able to win only seven games. At No. 1, Brendan Kincaid defeated Chris Covey (Exeter, NH/Exeter) 6-0, 6-1, and at No. 2, Scott Burtzlaff topped Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, NY/Solomon Schechter) 6-0, 6-0.
The Sea Gulls, who are ranked 22nd nationally in Division III, swept the three doubles matches. Burtzlaff and Kincaid knocked off Covey and Simon at No. 1, 8-0.
