STEVENSON, Md. - The 3-0 lead Goucher earned by sweeping the three doubles matches was gone. The Gophers suddenly found themselves locked into a 3-3 tie with Villa Julie this afternoon.
It all came down to the three singles matches that went to a third set, and when seniors Chris Covey (Exeter, NH/Exeter) and Michael Simon (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) prevailed in tiebreakers to win their singles matches, the Gophers were able to end their 2007-08 season with a 5-4 triumph over the Mustangs.
Covey had to rally from being a set down to Korey Garner at No. 2, but emerged with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory. Covey fought off two match points in the third set to pick up his seventh singles win of the season.
Simon's 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (5) win over Randy Speck at No. 6 clinched the match for Goucher (5-13) and allowed Simon to finish the season with a perfect 9-0 record at that spot in the singles line-up.
Covey and Simon were partners for one of the Gophers' three wins in doubles play. They defeated Kevin Stamm and Ben Petasky at No. 2, 9-7.
It was only the second time all season that the Gophers captured all three doubles matches. At No. 1, Steve Baum (Fallston, MD/Fallston) and Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, NY/Solomon Schechter) turned back Ryan Woodring and Garner, 8-5; at No. 3, Billie Weiss (Lutherville, MD/Dulaney) and Doug Mangi (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) topped Matt Kondilas and Maurice Waters, 8-4.
