MADISON, N.J. - The Landmark Conference today announced the names of the 32 student-athletes who make up the 2008 Spring Landmark All-Academic Team, which recognizes two male and two female athletes who have excelled athletically and academically from each of the eight Landmark institutions.
Goucher's four representatives on the inaugural Spring Landmark All-Academic Team are Emily Blatter (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge County), a senior attacker on the women's lacrosse team, Alex Boucher (North Wales, PA/Germantown Academy), a junior midfielder on the men's lacrosse team, Chris Covey (Exeter, NH/Exeter), a senior on the men's tennis team, and Sheba Newman-Blount (Lanham, MD/Bishop Ireton), a junior on the women's track and field team.
Nominees could compete in any of the Landmark spring sports and had to be a sophomore, junior or senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Blatter concluded her career at Goucher as the fourth-leading scorer in the history of the school's women's lacrosse program with 211 goals. She was a first-team All-Landmark and second-team All-Chesapeake Region selection on attack as a senior.
Boucher, who was the recipient of Goucher's Scholar-Athlete Award in 2007-08, earned a spot on the All-Landmark Conference Men's Lacrosse second team as a specialist.
Covey, who played primarily at first or second in Goucher's singles lineup as a senior, won seven singles matches during his final season with the Gophers.
Newman-Blount broke the outdoor school record in the 400-meter hurdles when she placed third overall in that event at the 2008 Landmark Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She also finished in sixth place in the triple jump and 100-meter dash.
The 2008 Spring Landmark All-Academic Team features 17 seniors, 12 juniors and a trio of sophomores, and all eight of the spring sports sponsored by the Landmark Conference are represented by at least one athlete.
