Gophers Fall Short with Only Three Wins in Singles Play

lasted three sets proved costly to Goucher today. A win in either
one would have pushed the Gophers over the top against St. Mary's
(Md.); instead the Seahawks pulled out a 5-4 victory.
The Gophers (3-12) picked up their only point during doubles play at No. 2 where Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) polished off Jeff Levy and Yuri Soussov, 8-4.
Baum and Leonard were also winners in singles play: Baum improved to 3-0 when he's competing at No. 1 for the Gophers by turning back Thomas Hoesman 6-4, 6-2; Leonard handled Drew Barnes of the Seahawks 6-1, 7-5 at No. 5.
Goucher's other point was earned by Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, N.Y./Solomon Schechter) at No. 2. He defeated Levy 6-1, 6-1.
In addition to a straight-set win by Sam Barton at No. 4, the Seahawks (12-10) secured two critical points thanks to a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 victory by Kyle Feeley over Goucher's Billie Weiss (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) at No. 3 and a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 triumph by Soussov over Dave Hemelt (Parkville, Md./Loch Raven) at No. 6.
