TOWSON, Md. — Michael Brooks (Old Westbury,
N.Y./Solomon Schechter), the only senior on Goucher's
2009-10 roster, didn't go down without a fight in the final match
of his career against Scranton today.
Brooks dropped the opening set in his match at No. 1 singles against Scott Melideo, but came back to win the second set. In lieu of a third set, the winner was determined by a matchbreaker and Melideo was able to complete a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (4) triumph.
The Royals, who are headed to the Landmark Conference postseason tournament, won the remaining five singles matches in straight set and swept the three doubles matches to down head coach Michael Vann's Gophers, 9-0.
At No. 2 singles, Carl Caceres of the Royals downed Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) 6-2, 6-4; at No. 3, Tim McGurrin was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Billie Weiss (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney).
The Gophers (4-15, 1-6 Landmark) were able to win only four games in the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Melideo and Joe Morra handled Brooks and Weiss, 8-2. That was also the score at No. 2 with Caceres and McGurrin defeating Baum and Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville).
The Royals (14-5, 6-1 Landmark) are the No. 2 seed in the conference playoffs.
