Gophers Resume Season, Suffer 8-0 Loss to Marlins
TOWSON, Md. — After going 0-2 in the fall, Goucher resumed its 2011-12 season today by hosting Virginia Wesleyan. The Gophers, who have five matches upcoming during their Spring Break trip to Orlanda, Fla., bowed to the Marlins, 8-0.

Only five of the six singles matches were completed before darkness set in. Virginia Wesleyan's Brian Luke defeated David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, Jamie Griffin came out on top of Goucher's Austin Prince (Oakland, Calif./Oakland Technical) 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 and Ryan Sadinski of the Marlins was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Nick Pelensky (Billings, Mont./Billings) at No. 3.
Daniel Csete (Miami, Fla./Brewster Academy) put up a fight at No. 5 singles for the Gophers, but eventually fell to Donnie Greathouse 6-4, 7-5. At No. 6, Darrell Fountain topped Seth Manfield (Bethesda, Md./Emerson Prep) 6-1, 6-4.
The Gophers (0-3) won at least three sets in each of the three doubles matches, but the Marlins (3-4) still pulled off a sweep. Luke and Sadinski posted an 8-5 victory over Prince and Spivey at No. 1, Greathouse and Griffin knocked off John Bescoby (San Marino, Calif./Maranatha) and Pelensky 8-3 at No. 2, and Connor Cassidy and Griffin Graves registered a 9-7 win over Murinin and Brett Blackman (Philadelphia, Pa./J.R. Masterman) at No. 3.
