KINGS POINT, N.Y. — Goucher nearly made a miraculous comeback, but winning four of the six singles matches still left the Gophers a point short against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in a Landmark Conference match played today.
After sweeping the three doubles matches, the Mariners came up with a pair of victories during the singles competition, which was just enough to finish off the Gophers, 5-4.
Nick Pelensky (Billings, Mont./Billings) was the first Goucher player to walk off the court having won his match, but by the time he completed his 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Timothy Buxton at No. 2 singles, the Mariners (5-5, 1-3 Landmark) had already assumed a 5-0 overall lead with the three doubles victories and wins by Jeff Gulitus at No. 1 and Chris Miller at No. 6.
Also winning for the Gophers (1-15, 0-4 Landmark) in singles play were Daniel Csete (Miami, Fla./Brewster Academy) at No. 3, Seth Manfield (Bethesda, Md./Emerson Prep) at No. 4 and Pat Murnin (Salt Lake City, Utah/East) at No. 5. Csete came back from being down a set to defeat Jeremy Guettlein 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (8), Manfield knocked off Frank Sysko 6-4, 6-3, and Murnin topped Moana Kawatachi 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (6).
Gulitus registered a 6-2, 6-1 victory over David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) at first singles, and he and Sysko turned back Spivey and Pelesnky, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. Miller's win at sixth singles was over Thomas Adair (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) by a score of 6-3, 6-0.
