TOWSON, Md. — David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School), who never played lower than No. 2 in Goucher's singles lineup during his four seasons with the Gophers, today was named the 2014 Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Senior Scholar Athlete.
Spivey is the third student-athlete from Goucher to be selected by a committee of Landmark officers, athletics directors and sports information directors to receive the conference's top academic award in 2013-14, joining cross country runners Hugh Geller (Devens, Mass./Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School) and Kathryn Walker (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh). To be considered, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher and the selections are based on the nominees' accomplishments in athletics and academics.
For winning nine singles matches for the Gophers in 2012-13 as a junior, Spivey was awarded a second-team spot for singles on the All-Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Team. Another nine-win season followed in 2013-14, and once again he was a second-team All-Landmark selection for singles play.
Spivey and Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) also formed one of the three doubles pairings that were granted first-team All-Landmark honors the past two seasons. Spivey walked off the court a winner 11 times with three different partners in doubles play in 2012-13; he played exclusively with Hoesman as a senior and by going 12-9 they became the first doubles team from Goucher to win more than 10 matches in a season 2004-05.
Spivey, who has been awarded a full scholarship to attend the University of Maryland School of Medicine, graduated from Goucher last month with degrees in biochemistry and molecular biology, plus he minored in economics. He made the Dean's List all eight semesters and finished with a 3.87 cumulative GPA.
Among the other academic accomplishments listed on Spivey's Senior Scholar Athlete nomination were his two appearances on the Landmark Spring All-Academic Team, his induction into Phi Beta Kappa (2014) and Chi Alpha Sigma (2013), the national college athlete honor society, and the Hilda Gabrilove '48 and Dr. Janice Gabrilove Dirzulaitis '73 Chemistry Prizes he was awarded the past two years. He was also the recipient of Goucher's Scholar-Athlete Award for juniors in 2013 and made the Landmark Fall All-Academic Team in 2011 when he was a member of the men's soccer team.
