Spivey, Two Freshmen Prevail in First-Round Singles Matches

Sophomore Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) notched his win in the first round of consolations in the championship draw. He suffered a 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-1 loss to Ari Blask from Dickinson, but came back to knock off Alex Blakhin from Mary Washington 8-1. Hoesman's tournament run ended when he lost in the second round of consolations to Emerson Walsh from Johns Hopkins 6-1, 6-0.
David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) competed in the fifth singles flight where he opened with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Daniel Erk from York, but then the junior captain was beaten by Elliot Perow from Juniata 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) in the second round.
Freshmen Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan/International School Bangkok) and Chad Resnik (Miami, Fla./Pinecrest School) followed similar paths to Spivey. Fujitani defeated Robert Bishop from St. Mary's (Md.) 6-3, 6-1 in his first match in the sixth singles flight, but bowed to Shanon Gunther from Salisbury 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) in his subsequent match. In the seventh singles flight, Resnik was a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Vincent Lapore from Penn State-Harrisburg, but was eliminated in the second round by Kaltrin Bullaj from York 7-5, 6-0.
Hoesman and Spivey formed a doubles team that competed in the championship draw. In the first round, they were beaten by Andrew Curtis and Brandon Griffin from Mary Washington, 8-6, and then by Drew Tomajczk and Graham Wilson from Virginia Wesleyan, 8-4, in the second round of consolations.
The pairing of Fujitani and Resnik also finished with an 0-2 record in the second doubles flight.
