Split at Singles Leaves Gophers on Short End of 5-4 Final

The Green Terror (1-0) came out of the doubles competition leading 2-1 as the 8-3 victory by Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) over Brian Kron and Satchel McCarthy at No. 1 provided the Gophers (0-2) with their only point.
The Gophers proved to be stronger than their in-state rival at the top of the singles lineup. Hoesman met up again with Kron at No. 1 and prevailed 6-0, 6-3. At No. 2, Spivey disposed of Alex Guthrie 7-6 (3), 6-0; at No. 3, Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan/International School Bangkok) turned back McCarthy 6-1, 7-6 (8).
To pull out the match, the Gophers needed to win one more singles match. They came close at No. 4, but McDaniel's Matthew Langsdale held off Chad Resnik (Miami, Fla./Pinecrest School) 6-3, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (10-5).
