The No. 1 doubles team of Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School), which earned first-team All-Landmark Conference honors in 2012-13, improved to 5-3 in dual matches this season by pinning an 8-4 setback on John Wylie and Matt Tuorto. The Gophers (3-6, 0-1 Landmark) also prevailed at No. 3 doubles as John Bescoby (San Marino, Calif./Maranatha) and Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan/International School Bangkok) polished off C.J. Widdifield and Giovanni Lombardi, 8-4.
Hoesman secured Goucher's only point during singles play as he met up again with Tuorto at No. 1 as recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win. At No. 2, Spivey came up short against Wylie 6-2, 7-5.
Fujitana won the first set at No. 3 singles before Lewis Cooper rallied for a 6-7 (3), 6-0, 6-3 win.
The Greyhounds (4-4, 1-0 Landmark) are now 7-0 against the Gophers since the formation of the Landmark Conference.
Before the Gophers host Scranton in their next Landmark Conference match on March 23, they'll spend Spring break in Hilton Head Island, S.C., where they are scheduled to compete four times. The first match is set for Monday against Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
