WASHINGTON — Goucher faced off against a Catholic squad this afternoon which had dropped only one match during a stretch of three straight Landmark Conference victories, and the Gophers were unable to slow that momentum as the Cardinals came away with a 9-0 victory.
Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) was the lone singles player to take a set in for Goucher (4-11, 0-4 Landmark). After falling 6-0 to Juan Lorido in the opening set at No. 1, Hoesman recovered to take the second by a 6-3 margin. Lorido, though, claimed the point with a tight 10-7 victory in the super tiebreaker.
Brian Bradley clinched the match for Catholic (8-8, 4-1) with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) at No. 2 singles. The Cardinals have won all seven meetings between the two teams since the formation of the Landmark Conference.
Catholic dropped just seven games in taking a 3-0 lead after the doubles portion of the match. Hoesman and Spivey had the closest match for the Gophers from the No. 1 spot before ultimately falling 8-4 to Lorido and Cassian Utrie.
Goucher continues its busy conference week with a 3:30 p.m. road contest at Susquehanna (3-10, 0-3) on Friday.
