Fujitani Gains 12th Win, Clinches Victory Over Mariners
KINGS POINT, N.Y. — Not only did Midori Fujitani pick up his team-leading 12th singles win of the season this afternoon, but the freshman's 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Geri Villan from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at No. 3 also gave Goucher the point it needed to clinch its first Landmark Conference victory of the season.
KINGS POINT, N.Y. — Not only did Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan/International School Bangkok) pick up his team-leading 12th singles win of the season this afternoon, but the freshman's 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Geri Villan from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at No. 3 also gave Goucher the point it needed to clinch its first Landmark Conference victory of the season.
David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) and Pat Murnin (Salt Lake City, Utah/East) also prevailed during the singles competition for the Gophers as they defeated the Mariners, 5-4.
Murnin's 6-2, 6-0 victory over Derek Acuna at No. 6 put Goucher up 3-1 and the next match to finish was No. 2 where Spivey disposed of Christian Miller 6-0, 6-2. The Mariners (4-5, 1-4 Landmark) used wins at No. 1 and No. 4 to close to within 4-3 before Fujitani earned the decisive point, improving his singles record in 2013-14 to 12-6.
At No. 1, James Hicks knocked off Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) 7-6 (4), 6-1; at No. 4, Karl Sasse was a 6-1, 7-5 winner over Chad Resnik (Miami, Fla./Pinecrest School).
The Gophers (5-11, 1-4 Landmark) took a 2-1 lead into the singles competition by winning two of the three doubles matches. An 8-2 victory by Fujitani and Resnik over Miller and Acuna at No. 3 evened the score at 1-1 and head coach Brendan Kincaid's squad went ahead thanks to the 8-5 triumph at No. 1 by Hoesman and Spivey over Hicks and Villan.
Goucher's Landmark Conference match against Susquehanna, postponed twice already this season, is now scheduled for tomorrow in Selinsgrove, Pa., starting at 1 p.m.
