Hoesman Repeats on All-Landmark First Team

TOWSON, Md. — The top two players in Goucher's singles line-up can both be found on the 2014 All-Landmark Conference men's tennis team.

Voting that determined the All-Landmark selections announced this afternoon was done by the conference's eight head coaches. They came up with a first team and a second team, with each one consisting of six players being recognized for their accomplishments in singles play during the 2013-14 season and three sets of two players who were deemed worthy of all-conference accolades for achievements in doubles competition.

Sophomore Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard), who has played exclusively at No. 1 singles since his arrival at Goucher, repeated as a first-team selection for singles on this year's select squad, and David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School), the only senior on the 2013-14 roster, earned a spot on the second team for singles for the second consecutive year.

Together they also make up one of the three doubles pairings that was granted first-team All-Landmark honors.

Hoesman finished with a 14-9 record in singles play this season, going 13-7 at No. 1. He prevailed in four of the seven matches against an opponent from the Landmark Conference and one of the losses was a competitive 6-3, 6-3 setback to Dean Polisena from Juniata, who was named today the conference's Player and Rookie of the Year.

"It was a very well-deserved honor for Seth (to make the first team)," commented head coach Brendan Kincaid. "He built on a solid freshman year when he was named Rookie of the Year in the Landmark Conference, working hard during the off-season to improve all facets of his game and it paid off. He has a bright future at Goucher."

Spivey, who never played lower than No. 2 during his four seasons with the Gophers, went 9-12 overall in singles play as a senior. He defeated three of the seven opponents he faced during Landmark Conference matches and bowed to Juniata's Elliot Perow, another second-team All-Landmark selection, 0-6, 6-4, 0-1 (9) in the second round of the 2013 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships.

"Good for David, I really wanted him to make all-conference again," Kincaid said. "Although he's the only senior on our team, he's a big loss for us to have to overcome next season."

Hoesman and Spivey played together 21 times during the 2013-14 season, going 12-7 at No. 1 doubles and 0-2 in two matches at the ITA regionals back in September. The only two losses the duo suffered in conference matches were 9-8 (4) to David Teres and Brian Williams from Scranton and 8-4 to Juan Lorido and Cassian Utrie from Catholic, the other two doubles teams that made the All-Landmark first team.
