Caracappa Prevails in Inaugural Match at No. 1 Singles

Joey Caracappa (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Saddlebrook Preparatory School) was stationed at No. 1 in Goucher's singles line-up for the first time in his young career and the freshman responded with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Michael Cannon. He was paired in doubles play with junior Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) for the 17th time this season and the duo improved to 14-3 overall by knocking off Cannon and Alex Machalick, 8-2, at No. 1.
Jack Hodges (London, England/Shrewsbury School) earned a point for the Gophers (11-4, 5-0 Landmark) with his 6-4, 6-4 win over Machalick at second singles; at No. 3, Hoesman polished off Michael Yost 6-0, 6-4.
Goucher's remaining two wins in singles play came at No. 5 where Britt Shortle (Lake Mary, Fla./Trinity Preparatory School) topped Nathan Dowling 6-1, 6-0 and at No. 6 where Josh Goldberg (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) dropped the first set, but came back to defeat Evan Hinkley 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8).
The Blue Jays (0-10, 0-4 Landmark) secured their only point of the match at No. 4 singles where Ryan Caris rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (14) victory over Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan/International School Bangkok).
The Gophers will have the opportunity to move into a tie for first place with Juniata if they can handle Catholic on Wednesday at home. The match begins at 3 p.m.
