TOWSON, Md. — Goucher was one win away from clinching the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference postseason tournament and Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) was one win away from tying the conference's all-time record for career singles victories heading into today's home match against Elizabethtown.
By pinning a 9-0 setback on the visiting Blue Jays (5-8, 2-4 Landmark), head coach Brendan Kincaid's squad guaranteed itself home-court advantage throughout the Landmark playoffs. The Gophers will host the No. 4 seed, which has not yet been determined, in a semifinal on Wednesday, May 4.
Hoesman, one of two seniors on the 2015-16 roster who were recognized in a brief ceremony prior to the match, was victorious at third singles. His 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Elizabethtown's Nathan Dowling boosted his career record in singles competition to 57-24, giving him a share of the all-time Landmark record that had belonged to Scranton's Carl Caceres (2007-11).
- Hoesman, who is now only two wins away from tying the Goucher men's tennis program's record for singles wins by an individual in his career, was partnered with Joey Caracappa (Smithtown, N.Y./Saddlebrook Preparatory School) at first doubles for the Gophers (15-4, 7-0 Landmark) and the duo responded with a meticulous 8-0 triumph over Alex Machalick and Ryan Caris.
- Caracappa defeated Machalick 6-0, 6-4 at first singles.
- Only one singles match went past two sets: at No. 5, Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan/International School Bangkok) battled back from being down a set and then overcame a 4-0 deficit in the super tiebreaker to record a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (12-10) victory over Evan Hinkley.
- Jack Hodges (London, England/Shrewsbury School) earned the point that sealed today's win over the Blue Jays when he completed his 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Ryan Caris at second singles.
The Gophers play their final Landmark Conference match of the season on Saturday against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. The match is slated to get under way at 1 p.m.
