Goucher Athletics Announces Neumann Award Winner
BALTIMORE, Md. – Michael Herman (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Nova Porg), a member of the Goucher College men's tennis team, has been named the Neumann Award winner.
The Neumann Award is an annual athletics departmental award presented annually since 1973 to the well-rounded student-athlete who, through his/her character, loyalty, and dedication, has evolved into an effective leader, outstanding citizen and distinguished athlete. The members of the Department take great pride in honoring the student who has shown, through example, the principles that Bill Neumann, a former chair of the History Department at Goucher, believed in.
"This year he was a captain on the team and he was a leader in terms of level of tennis play, attitude, work ethic and especially the initiative that he took just to help the team develop at an individual level," said men's tennis head coach Eric Spangler.
This year, Herman went 2-2 in singles play at a Division I tournament hosted by Loyola University in the fall and also teamed up with fellow senior Frankie Mullinix (North Sutton, N.H./The George School) to go 3-1 in the same tournament.
"I would like to thank the athletics department for giving me such a wonderful award," said Herman. "As a leader I have always tried to show my dedication and loyalty to the tennis program though my work ethic and have team-oriented mindset."
Herman helped Goucher to three-straight Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Championship titles and will leave Goucher seventh in program history in doubles wins (44) and 11th in singles wins (41). The 2017 Landmark Conference Co-Rookie of the Year and all-conference second teamer in singles and doubles, is the only senior to have earned a win in each of the three trips to the NCAA Championships after posting a 3-1 record in singles play on the national stage.
Along with Herman, also nominated for this award was men's soccer senior Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union), men's swimming senior Jacy MacConvery (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview), women's soccer junior Rylee McDonnell (Estell Manor, N.J./Ocean City) and men's lacrosse senior Matt Woodson (Timonium, Md./McDonough). Student-athletes can be nominated for more than one award, but can only be awarded one athletic department honor.
