Goucher Men's Tennis Is The Four-Time Defending Landmark Conference Champion And Yada, Yada, Yada, The Gophers Opened 2021 With A Win
HUNTINGDON, Pa. – It has been 371 days since the Goucher College men's tennis team played a match, but for the three remaining players from the four-time defending Landmark Conference Championship team, it was business as usual. Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va./Dominion), Omosesan Adebamgbe (Philadelphia, Pa./Lower Merion), and Brian Kane (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) each won their singles and doubles matches to power the Gophers to a 7-2 win against Juniata College 7-2 in conference action on Saturday.
Adebamgbe and Dumas were an all-conference second-team doubles tandem in 2019 at No. 3 doubles. The duo, who played three matches at No. 2 doubles last year, made their debut at No. 1 doubles on Saturday and earned an 8-0 win.
Kane and newcomer Angel Cerpa (El Paso, Texas/Americas) took their No. 2 doubles match 8-0 and freshmen Joshua Pluard (Kannapolis, Pa./A.L. Brown) and Alex Dominiguez (Healdsburg, Calif./Healdsburg) earned their first collegiate win with an 8-1 decision at No. 3 doubles to give the Blue and Gold a 3-0 lead after doubles.
Dumas, who entered the season with 59 career singles wins to sit in fifth place, became the fourth player in program history to reach 60 career singles wins after earning a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. The match was the third time the 2019 Landmark Conference Most Valuable Player has played at No. 1 singles, and Dumas improves to 3-0 at the classification to also clinch the Gophers' 15th-straight conference regular-season win and 21st-straight victory against a conference opponent, including the postseason.
Kane, who was honored as a Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week in the fall of 2019, earned Goucher's fourth team point thanks to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Adebamgbe also won without giving up a game with a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 2 singles. Both Adebamgbe and Kane played in their highest classification on the afternoon after play between No. 4 and No. 6 singles in their first two years.
Cerpa had a nice debut by also taking both of his matches in his first match at Goucher. After winning his doubles match with Kane, the freshman earned a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 4 singles for his first singles win.
Dominquez fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles, and Pluard had to pull out of his No. 5 singles match due to an injury.
The Goucher men's tennis team will make its 2021 home debut and play the inaugural match at the Evelyn Dyke Schroedl '62 Tennis Center against Catholic University of America on Wednesday. Match time is 3 p.m. Spectators are not permitted, but Goucher athletics will provide live video and live stats for the match.
