Cerpa Earns First Singles Win At Home To Help Goucher Men's Tennis To 6-3 Win Against Elizabethtown
BALTIMORE, Md. - Angel Cerpa (El Paso, Texas/Americas) won his first match at the Evelyn Dyke Schroedl '62 Tennis Center to help the Goucher College team to a 6-3 win against Elizabethtown College in Landmark Conference men's tennis action on Saturday.
Cerpa got his first taste of victory with a win in doubles against Susquehanna University on April 3, but the freshman won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, against Elizabethtown at No. 4 singles to notch his first singles win on the Goucher campus. It was Cerpa's second collegiate win after also defeating Juniata on March 27 on the road.
The Gophers opened the afternoon with a 2-1 lead after doubles. Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va./Dominion) and Omosesan Adebamgbe (Philadelphia, Pa./Lower Merion) dispensed its No. 1 doubles match, 8-0. Cerpa and Brian Kane (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) earned the win at No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 decision.
Dumas, the current Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, earned a straight-set 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles for his 62nd career win, which ties former teammate Jack Hodges (62, 2014-18) for second place on the program's all-time career singles win list. Dumas will also end his career not allowing a game to an Elizabethtown player.
Adebamgbe took the same route as his doubles partner in his No. 2 singles match with a 6-0, 6-0 win, while Kane allowed one game in the second set of a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 3 singles.
Alex Dominguez (Healdsburg, Calif./Healdsburg) and Joshua Pluard (Kannapolis, N.C./A. L. Brown) lost 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Pluard fell 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles, and Dominguez lost 6-0, 7-5 at No. 6 singles.
Goucher returns to action on Sunday at Moravian College. The match time is 1 p.m.
