Goucher Men's Tennis Falls To Scranton, 6-3
BALTIMORE, Md. – Angel Cerpa (El Paso, Texas/Americas) and Brian Kane (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) both went 2-0 on the afternoon, but Goucher College fell to the University of Scranton 6-3 in Landmark Conference men's tennis action on Sunday. The loss snapped an 18-game conference regular-season winning streak.
Cerpa and Kane won at No. 2 doubles 8-1 to improve to 5-0 as a doubles team in 2021. Kane took his No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-0 to earn his 12th-straight conference win in singles play. Cerpa improved to 4-1 on the year with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.
Omosesan Adebamgbe (Philadelphia, Pa./Lower Merion) and Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Md./Dominion) dropped their No. 1 doubles match, 8-3, for its first conference loss after 11-straight victories.
Dumas was on the doorstep of history, needing one win to tie Midiori Futijani's (64, 2013-17) program record for career singles wins. Dumas lost at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-2 to end his 24-match winning streak. The only other loss in Dumas' career was to Scranton in his freshman season.
Adebamgbe battled at No. 2 singles to force a second-set tiebreak before falling 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). Alex Dominguez (Healdsburg, Calif./Healdsburg) fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. The Gophers played a man short and defaulted their No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles match to Scranton.
The last time the Blue and Gold lost a Landmark Conference match was a 5-4 loss at Juniata on April 28, 2017, while the last circuit loss in Baltimore was a 6-3 loss to Scranton. Goucher avenged both losses that season to win its second-straight Landmark Conference Championship, and start a 24-match winning streak against conference opponents and 18 consecutive wins during the regular season.
Goucher will play its final regular-season home match on Wednesday against the Catholic University of America. The match time is 3:30 p.m. It is the third scheduled Wednesday matchup against Catholic. The previous two matchups against Catholic were rescheduled due to the weather.
