Dumas Becomes Men's Tennis Career Wins All-Time Leader With 65th Singles Win At Catholic; Goucher Wins, 5-4
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The nation's capital is known to host historic events, but probably nothing like what transpired on Saturday for Goucher College men's tennis senior Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va./Dominon). The senior won in straight sets on Saturday to become the Gophers men's tennis all-time career singles wins leader with 65 victories. The Blue and Gold also defeated Catholic University of America 5-4 in Landmark Conference action for the second time in four days.
Dumas had to work hard to tie the record in his Wednesday's match against Frankie Fortunati, winning in three sets 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the match. Dumas took down Fortunati in the rematch on Saturday in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, to again clinch the match.
Dumas surpasses Midiori Futijani's (64, 2013-17) previous mark, and ties the Landmark Conference career singles mark held by Juniata's Bryan Gregory (65, 2012-16).
Besides the record-setting day, the match was a repeat of Wednesday, thanks to Goucher winning No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and taking No. 1, 3, and 5 singles to clinch the match.
Dumas and Omosesan Adebamgbe (Philadelphia, Pa./Lower Merion) won at No. 1 doubles, while Angel Cerpa (El Paso, Texas/Americas) and Brian Kane (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) took their No. 2 doubles match, 8-3.
Adebamgbe, playing No. 3 singles for the first time this season, won 6-0, 6-3. Cerpa improved to 6-1 on the year with a 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 4 singles.
Kane moved up to No. 2 singles for the first time in his career and fell 6-2, 6-1, while Alex Dominguez (Healdsburg, Calif./Healdsburg) lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Catholic also picked up points by default at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
