Goucher Men's Tennis Edged By Drew, 5-4; Gophers Will Be The No. 3 Seed In Landmark Conference Tournament
MADISON, N.J. - The Goucher College men's tennis team will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference Tournament after falling 5-4 to Drew University on Tuesday. With the win, Drew will be the No. 1 seed.
The last time the Gophers were the No. 3 seed in the postseason was when they finished 6-2 with losses to the University of Scranton and Juniata College. The Blue and Gold avenged those two losses in the postseason after defeating Scranton in the semifinals and Juniata in the title bout to win the tournament title. To keep the drive for five straight tournament titles alive, Goucher will have to repeat that feat in 2021.
The Gophers fell behind 2-1 after doubles. Omosesan Adebamgbe (Philadelphia, Pa./Lower Merion) and Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va./Dominion) won at No. 1 doubles, but for the first time this season, Angel Cerpa (El Paso, Texas/Americas) and Brian Kane fell at No. 2 doubles, 8-4.
Goucher needed four singles wins to pull out the match and came through with three wins. Kane won at No. 2 singles 7-5, 7-6 (7-1), Adebamgbe won at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-3, and Cerpa won a three-set thriller, 2-6, 7-5, 11-9.
Dumas lost 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and Alex Dominguez (Healdsburg, Calif./Healdsburg) dropped his No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0. The Blue and Gold defaulted at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
Dumas finished the regular season at 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Kane went 1-1 at No. 2 singles and 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while Adebamgbe was 4-2 at No. 2 singles, and 2-0 at No. 3 singles. Cerpa has won his last six singles matches to improve to 7-1 on the year at No. 4 singles.
In doubles, Adebamgbe and Dumas are 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Cerpa and Kane are 7-1 at No. 2 singles this season.
Goucher returns to action on Saturday when the squad hosts Moravian College in the Landmark Conference Quarterfinals. Time to be announced.
