Goucher Athletics Announces Coaches Award Winner
BALTIMORE, Md. – Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va./Dominion), a member of the Goucher College men's tennis team, has been named the Coaches Award winner.
The Coaches Award is given annually to the senior athlete that has most completely represented Goucher College throughout his/her athletic career. Factors involved in the selection of the winner include accomplishments at his or her sport or sports, including awards and honors garnered for his/her athletic ability, and displayed leadership skills toward his/her teammates.
"Thank you so much for selecting me for this award," said Dumas. "I wanted to thank my coaches past and present. I couldn't have asked for better mentors or friends from my teammates over the years."
Dumas went 7-3 at No. 1 singles in 2021 and 9-1 in doubles play at No. 1 doubles with partner Omosesan Adebamgbe (Philadelphia, Pa./Lower Merion). The senior won at No. 1 singles against Catholic 6-2, 6-0 on April 24 to break former teammate Midiori Futijani's (65, 2013-17) all-time career record for singles wins. Dumas then clinched the match in the Landmark Conference Semifinals with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles to establish a new Landmark Conference all-time career wins mark with 66 wins. Dumas was named to the All-Landmark Conference first team for singles and doubles in 2021.
"Congratulations to Slade Dumas on the Coaches Award," said men's tennis head coach Eric Spangler. "I think this award exemplifies his abilities on and off the court with his teammates. I think it comes down to one trait that he represents the best, and that is his consistency."
Dumas finished 66-24 in singles play and 54-16 in doubles play, including a 28-4 mark over three seasons with Adebamgbe for his career. Along with finishing as the all-time leader in Goucher and conference history for singles, Dumas' 54 doubles wins puts him in a tie for fourth with former teammate Frankie Mullinix (52, 2016-20) for fourth place in team history. The senior was named the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week five times in his career, including twice this season, and was selected to the All-Landmark Conference second team for singles and doubles in 2019, along with being the Most Valuable Player of the 2019 conference tournament. Dumas was a member of the Landmark Conference Tournament championship teams in 2017, 2018, and 2019, and he helped the Gophers advance to the semifinals all four years.
