Gophers Outlast Bears in 2023-24 Debut

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Goucher College men's tennis team opened the 2023-24 season with a marathon 7-2 victory Saturday afternoon over Ursinus College at Bailey Tennis Courts.
- Goucher (1-0) took a 2-1 lead over the Bears (1-1) after doubles.
- Angel Cerpa and Benedikt Rummel prevailed at No. 2 doubles in a tiebreak, winning 8-7 (7-4).
- Unai Laguardia Alvarez and Tadeo Asprella posted an 8-2 win at No. 3.
- Calis Nguyen and Gabe Naftoly fell 8-5 at No. 1.
- Five of the six singles matches went to a third set.
- After winning a first set tiebreak, Alvarez registered a 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 10-3 win at No. 1 for his first collegiate singles win.
- Asprella rallied at No. 2 for a 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 triumph.
- Naftoly captured the third singles point with a marathon third set tiebreak, winning 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 13-11.
- Nguyen also rallied from a set one deficit, posting a 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 win at No. 5.
- First year George King also won his debut with a 6-2, 5-7, 10-6 win at No. 6.
- Goucher won its season opener for the first time since the spring, 2021 season.
- The Gophers have won the last three meetings against the Bears.
- Goucher opens home and conference play next Saturday, hosting Elizabethtown College at noon at the Schroedl Tennis Center.
