Gophers Stay Unbeaten in Landmark, Top Catholic

TOWSON, Md. - The Goucher College men's tennis team remained unbeaten in Landmark Conference play with a 7-2 win over Catholic University Thursday afternoon at the Schroedl Tennis Center.
- Goucher (9-8, 6-0 Landmark) jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles over Catholic (12-7, 4-3).
- Unai Laguardia Alvarez and Tadeo Asprella picked up an 8-1 win at No. 3.
- Angel Cerpa and Benedikt Rummel downed their opponent at No. 2 8-5.
- At No. 1, Gabe Naftoly and Calis Nguyen went to a tiebreak before falling 8-7 (8-6).
- The bottom of the Gophers lineup made quick work of their opponents to clinch the match.
- Rummel was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at No. 6, while Nguyen was a 6-4, 6-0 winner at No. 5.
- Cerpa prevailed in his match at No. 4 6-1, 6-3.
- Naftoly and Asprella needed second-set tiebreakers in their matches to pick up points.
- Naftoly won 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) at No. 2, while at No. 3, Asprella was a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) victor.
- Laguardia Alvarez forced a third set at No. 1 before falling 6-3, 4-6, 11-9.
- Goucher is the lone unbeaten team remaining in the Landmark Conference.
- Rummel ran his singles win streak to eight matches and is 11-2 overall.
- Naftoly and Nguyen each won their second straight singles match.
- Cerpa, who recently moved into the top 10 in program history in career doubles wins, won his 46th career doubles match and is one shy of seventh place.
- Goucher has won 10 in a row against Catholic.
- The Gophers host Juniata on Saturday at 1 pm at the Schroedl Tennis Center.
