Cardinals Nip Gophers by Three Points in Team Scoring
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Goucher's Joey Negreann (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) successfully defended his individual title today at the Catholic Invitational.
The junior completed the 8,000-meter race conducted on the campus of the U.S. Armed Forces Retirement Home in 28:25.8, which gave him a more than 34-second victory over the runner-up, Mike Puskar from Catholic (28:59.9). Catholic's Kian Olia finished in third place and Goucher's Adam Scipione (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) was fourth as they turned in times of 29:38.8 and 30:00.4, respectively.
Negreann was also the first runner to cross the finish line at this event last year. His winning time in 2009 as a sophomore was 28:09.44.
The Gophers had a third runner in the top 10 today as Troy Browne (Springdale, Md./C.H. Flowers) recorded a time of 30:31.5, good for eighth place. The final two runners who figured in Goucher's team score were Zach Coto (Newburgh, N.Y./Oakwood Friends School) in 11th place with a time of 31:56.0 and Gillian Ziegler (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Green Meadow Waldorf School) in 19th place (33:16.4).
Only two of the four schools which had runners competing in the race had enough to earn a team score: Catholic finished in first place with 27 points and Goucher was second with 30.
