TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's Joey Negreann (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) improved his time over last year by more than 51 seconds, enough for him to be the first runner to cross the finish line today at the Goucher Cross Country Classic.
As a sophomore in 2009, Negreann completed the 8,000-meter race over the rural terrain of the Goucher campus in 28:00.30. He placed second among all Division III runners and fourth overall.
This year, however, his winning time of 27:09.2 allowed him to beat out all 113 other runners. Seven consecutive runners from the U.S. Naval Academy followed Negreann before the next Division III runner, Steve Monteleone from Drew, placed ninth overall. The runner-up was Alexander Merrall (27:13.7).
Following Negreann, the next three Goucher runners to come in were senior Adam Scipione (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) in 34th place with a time of 30:02.2, sophomore Nick Manta (North Wales, Pa./Abington Friends School) in 48th place (30:36.8) and freshman Troy Browne (Springdale, Md./C.H. Flowers) in 60th place (31:09.9).
Navy wound up as the team champion with 20 points. The top Division III team was Johns Hopkins in second place with 114 points. Goucher finished seventh in the team scoring with 183 points.
