Bercovici, Fink Chosen as Final Gophers of the Month

TOWSON, Md. — Women’s tennis player Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, N.J./Bergen Tech), who was recently named the Landmark Conference’s Player of the Year, and equestrian rider Joey Fink (Baltimore, Md./The Park School), who led Goucher to a sixth place result at the IHSA national championships, have been selected as the final Gophers of the Month for the 2013-14 school year.

Bercovici became the fourth Goucher student-athlete across all sports to be chosen as Player of the Year since the Gophers joined the Landmark Conference in 2007. She finished off her season with an 8-2 record in April, going 4-1 in both singles and doubles. Bercovici was 8-0 in conference matches during that span, completing a perfect 12-0 mark across both disciplines in 2014.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association consistently ranked her among the top players in the Atlantic South region, with Bercovici achieving a high ranking of No. 13 earlier in the spring. For the year, she dropped only four sets during her 21 singles victories.

Fink becomes the second two-time recipient of Goucher’s monthly award, joining men’s swimmer Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne). He began the month of April by contributing 10 points towards Goucher's winning total of 46 at the IHSA Zone IV Championships. Fink finished in second place in both open fences and open flat at the competition.

He then played a key role in the Gophers’ strong showing at IHSA nationals, accounting for seven of Goucher’s nine points after winning open flat in the team competition. That result led the Gophers to their second-best finish in program history at the national level. Fink also competed individually at nationals, earning a pair of top six showings in open flat and open fences.

The selections of Bercovici and Fink as Gophers of the Month were made by the school’s sports information staff. Accomplishments from both April and the opening week of May were taken into account when selecting the award winners. Men’s lacrosse defender Andrew Foster (Ashland, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy), men’s tennis player Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and women’s lacrosse midfielder Erin Reifsnyder (Austin, Texas/St. Andrew's Episcopal) were also considered for the award.
