Thornton-Fillyaw Finishes Fifth in 800M Final, Earns All-America Honors
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Goucher College women's indoor track and field sophomore Tanise Thornton-Fillyaw finished fifth in the women's 800-meter final at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. With her fifth-place showing, Thornton-Fillyaw becomes Goucher's first-ever track and field All-American.
After running a school and Landmark Conference-record 2:10.18 in Friday's preliminaries, Thornton-Fillyaw finished Saturday's race in 2:10.55. She was fifth after the first 200 meters with a split of 31.60 and slipped to sixth at the midway point with a second 200 time of 33:20. Thornton-Fillyaw moved back to fifth with 200 meters left after a 33:03 split, the third-fastest over the next-to-last 200. On the final lap she posted a 32.73, the third-fastest final lap.
Washington University St. Louis senior Emma Kelley won the event in a Division III-record time of 2:04.13, breaking the previous mark of 2:05.39 set by Messiah's Esther Seeland in 2022. Hope Murphy of Baldwin-Wallace was second, clocking in at 2:09.91, followed by Ellie Rising of George Fox (2:10.17) and Alessia Sarussi of Washington U. (2:10.35).
Megan Bell of Rochester (2:10.68), Bethel (Minn.) junior Annessa Ihde (2:11.53) and Stockton's Kayla Kass (2:13.92) rounded out the field.
Thornton-Fillyaw, who was making her second indoor 800 nationals appearance, becomes the first track and field USTFCCCA All-American, indoor our outdoor, male or female, in Goucher program history. Goucher Hall of Fame member Jeff Olenick earned All-America honors after finishing ninth at the 2000 NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championship.
