MADISON, N.J. - The Landmark Conference today announced the names
of the 32 student-athletes who make up the 2009 Winter Landmark
All-Academic Team, which recognizes two male and two female
athletes who have excelled athletically and academically from each
of the eight Landmark institutions.
Goucher's four representatives on the second annual Winter
Landmark All-Academic Team are Ryan Comstock (Frederick,
Md./Middletown), a senior center on the men's basketball
team, Zachary Martin (Victor, N.Y./Victor
Central), a junior on the men's indoor track and field
team, Bethany Natoli (Alexandria, Va./O'Connell),
a senior on the women's swimming team, and Amber Smith
(Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame), a junior forward
on the women's basketball team.
Each school selected its four nominees, all of whom had to compete
in any of the six winter sports for which the Landmark Conference
conducts a championship. In addition, the nominees had to be a
sophomore, junior or senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or
higher.
Comstock is a management major with a 3.62 GPA. He earned two
letters playing for head coach Leonard Trevino after transferring
to Goucher from Frederick Community College. As a senior, he
appeared in 18 games, averaging 1.7 points and 1.3 rebounds per
contest.
Martin, who placed ninth in the 5,000-meter run at the 2008-09
Landmark Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, is
studying English and carries a GPA of 3.68.
Natoli, who is working toward a degree in international relations
and possesses a 3.71 GPA, also represented Goucher on the 2007-08
Winter Landmark All-Academic Team. She was the 2007-08 Landmark
Conference champion in both the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes, and
this year she placed fourth in both of those events and third in
the 400-yard individual medley at the conference meet.
Smith was a second-team selection on the 2008-09 All-Landmark
Conference Women's Basketball Team after leading the conference in
rebounds (9.4 per game) and ranking third in points (14.3 ppg.),
fourth in steals (2.63 spg.) and fifth in blocked shots (1.00 bpg.)
She started all 24 games for the Gophers and scored at least 10
points in all but three of them. She is a communications and media
studies major with a 3.41 GPA.
The 2009 Winter Landmark All-Academic Team features 17 seniors, 11
juniors and four sophomores. Natoli is one of the seven honorees
who also represented their schools on last year's inaugural Winter
Landmark All-Academic Team.
