Goucher Women's Basketball Upended By Catholic On The Road
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Goucher College lost a Landmark Conference women's basketball game to Catholic University of America on Wednesday.
Freshman Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) paced the Gophers with 18 points and 10 rebounds. It marked the freshman's second career double-double after registering 27 points and 13 rebounds against Yeshiva on December 30 while she also narrowly missed turning the trick against McDaniel on January 3 after posting nine points and 10 caroms. She has posted double figures in points in six-straight games and 15 times on the year. She leads the team with 16.1 points per game.
Fellow freshman Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) added 16 points. It was McFadden's fifth-straight game in double figures in points and marked the eighth time in the last nine tilts she has reached 10 points in a game. She has 15 games with at least 10 points this season and ranks second on the team with 14.3 points per game.
After McFadden made a trey to cut the margin to 4-3, the Cardinals rolled off the next nine points to take a 13-3 advantage with 6:27 left. Nicole Wolard (Tampa, Fla./Wharton) hit a jumper and Jorryn Avery (Glen Burnie, Md./Severn School) drained a 3-ball to cut the margin to 13-8 with 5:16 remaining in the first quarter. After Catholic grabbed a 19-10 edge, McFadden registered consecutive baskets to make it a five-point game against at 2:15.The Cardinals then scored 10 of the final 12 points in the frame to take a 29-16 advantage.
Catholic used a 14-10 second quarter to take a 43-26 lead into the locker room. The two teams battled to a 17-all third quarter and the Cardinals used a 23-15 fourth quarter to cap an 83-58 decision.
Shelby Apostol (Oxnard, Calif./Saint Bonaventure) added eight points off the bench and Wolard had seven points, four rebounds and four steals on the night.
Goucher returns to action on Saturday at Susquehanna University. Game time is 4 p.m.
