Avery's Career Night Not Enough For Goucher Women's Basketball Against Catholic
BALTIMORE, Md. – Despite a career-high 15 points from Jorryn Avery (Glen Burnie, Md./Severn School), Goucher College falls to Catholic University in Landmark Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday.
For the second time in five games, Avery posts a double-figure point game. She scored a then career-high 12 points against Juniata on January 30 before re-establishing her career standard on Wednesday. Both games have been in front of the Decker Sports & Recreation Center faithful. The freshman is averaging 9.0 points per game in her last five games. Avery also added a career-best seven rebounds for her third game with at least five boards in her last eight games.
Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) registered 12 points for her 19th double-figure point game of the season including her last 11 tilts. The freshman leads the team with 15.5 points per game.
Nicole Wolard (Tampa, Fla./Wharton) will be honored before the Gophers final game of the season on Saturday against Scranton. Tip off is 2 p.m. The senior began her final homestand with 10 points and seven rebounds against the Cardinals. She has posted double figures in points 34 times in her career and 16 times in her senior campaign. She ranks third on the team with 10.8 points per game while pacing the squad with 8.0 rebounds per game. Wolard has hauled in at least five rebounds in 22 of the 24 contests this season.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 22-11 lead after the first quarter and a 24-11 advantage early in the second frame. Fueled by five points apiece by Avery and Williams, the Gophers went on a 14-6 spurt to trim the margin to 30-24 with 96 seconds left in the half. Catholic scored the final two baskets of the half to take a 34-24 lead going into the locker room. A 15-7 third quarter and a 19-12 fourth quarter helped the Cardinals to a 68-48 victory.
Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) posted seven points and seven rebounds in the loss.
