Anise Williams Named Landmark Conference Women's Basketball Athlete Of The Week
BALTIMORE, Md. – Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School), a member of the Goucher College women's basketball team, has been named the Landmark Conference Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week for the week of February 3-9, 2020. It is the second time the sophomore has earned the conference weekly honor.
Williams averaged 20.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.0 steals and 3.0 assists per game in a 1-1 week for the Gophers. Williams scored six points in a 17-8 run to give Goucher the lead for good and then hit four free throws in the waning seconds to help end a 50-game Landmark Conference losing streak for Goucher College with a 71-67 win against Juniata on Wednesday. The 2019 Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year posted a conference career-high 28 points against the Eagles thanks to a 7-for-13 (53.8 percent) shooting performance from the floor, 1 of 2 (50.0 percent) from behind the arc and connected on a career-best 13-for-15 (86.7 percent) from the free throw line. She also added nine rebounds, six steals and three assists in the squad's first league win since 2015-16. Williams posted 12 points, four steals and three assists on Saturday against Drew University.
The sophomore leads the team and ranks fourth in the conference with 15.2 points per game while she leads the team, the league and ranks nationally with 79 steals. Williams, who has 33 more steals than the next best thief in the conference, sits in sixth place in NCAA Division III in steals and eighth in steals per game (3.76). In addition, the sophomore leads the conference in both free throws made (92) and free throws attempted (144).
For her career, Williams is averaging 15.2 points per game and has amassed 685 career points, 250 rebounds, 165 steals, 110 assists and 20 blocked shots in 45 games, including 44 starts.
Williams was the last Goucher player to earn the weekly distinction when she picked up the honor for the week of November 19-25, 2018 after scoring 19 points in a win against Notre Dame University of Maryland.
It marks the 11th time since the Gophers joined the Landmark Conference a women's basketball player has bestowed the top player of the week honor and Williams becomes the seventh different player to earn the recognition and the third player to repeat the trick. Shadae Swan was the first player to receive the honor when she nabbed it three times in her senior year (December 3, 2007, January 7, 2008 and January 14, 2008) and Amber Smith is the only other player along with Williams to earn the recognition twice (January 12, 2009 and November 30, 2009). Leah Roberts-Brown (December 22, 2008), Latifa Butler (December 31, 2012), Sharnell Huff (February 3, 2014) and Brianna Bull (January 30, 2017) each took home the honor once in their career.
Goucher returns to action at home on Wednesday against Elizabethtown College. Game time is 7 p.m. Prior to the contest, the Gophers will honor senior Kerry Chun (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute), who has appeared in 73 games including 58 starts in her four-year career.
