Gophers Place Three in Double Figures at St. Mary's

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Goucher College women's basketball team placed three players in double figures as it fell on the road to St. Mary's College of Maryland 82-66 Tuesday evening. Merci Turner posted her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
- Goucher (0-5) took a 9-8 lead four minutes into the game following a Briyah Haggins three-pointer.
- After St. Mary's (4-2) retook the lead on a three of its own, five straight points by Julia Cavoli put the Gophers in front 14-11 at the 5:17 mark.
- The lead traded hands two more times before the Seahawks took a 19-16 lead into the second period.
- The hosts built a 28-20 advantage 2:20 into the second frame.
- Five straight points capped by a Savannah Holmes three pulled Goucher within 28-25 at the 7:24 mark.
- The Seahawks built a 10-point cushion, 38-28, with 2:12 on the clock.
- A Cavoli three with 27 seconds left in the half made it a 41-34 game at intermission.
- Goucher scored the first six points of the second half to pull within one, 41-40.
- The Gophers again cut the lead to one, 48-47, with 4:07 on the clock on a Haggins basket.
- A Brianna Johnson three with 2:03 left in the frame again made it a one-point Seahawk lead, 55-54.
- St. Mary's closed the period on a 7-0 run and led 62-54 after 30 minutes.
- Goucher whittled the lead to five, 66-61, with 6:46 to play on a three-point play by Turner.
- The Seahawks responded with seven straight points to go up 73-61 with 4:20 left.
- The Gophers cut it to nine on a Haggins three that made it 73-64 with 3:43 to go, but got no closer.
- Turner finished 6-12 from the floor and four of her 12 rebounds were on the offensive end. She led the Gophers in scoring for the fourth time in five games.
- Johnson was 7-14 from the field and registered 15 points and eight rebounds.
- Cavoli knocked down three three-pointers and finished with 14 points.
- Maiya Villanueva added eight points and dished out five assists, while Haggins had eight points and six boards.
- Goucher shot 33.3% overall, 9-39 from three and 5-10 at the free throw line.
- The Seahawks, who edged the Gophers 55-54 on the boards, shot 36% overall, were 10-32 behind the arc and 12-14 at the stripe.
- Goucher opens Landmark Conference play next Wednesday, November 29, traveling to Susquehanna for a 7 pm tip.
