Gophers Take on Elizabethtown at The Palestra
PHILADELPHIA - Elizabethtown College scored the final 21 points of the first quarter and never looked back as it went on to an 84-34 Landmark Conference women's basketball victory over Goucher College at The Palestra Sunday afternoon as part of the second annual Landmark at The Palestra event.
Goucher (1-14, 1-8 Landmark) led 3-2 on a Maiya Villanueva three-pointer 38 seconds into the game. The Blue Jays (11-4, 7-1) went up 8-3 before the Gophers got back within 10-8 on a Savannah Holmes basket at the 6:42 mark. Etown went 7-12 behind the arc and shot 57% overall in the first quarter as it opened up a 31-8 lead.
Villanueva snapped Goucher's scoring drought with a three 1:43 into the second quarter. Elizabethtown led 46-18 at intermission and 73-24 after three quarters.
Villanueva and Merci Turner paced Goucher with 11 points apiece. Holmes added eight points, going 3-6 from the floor. Villanueva also grabbed five rebounds, while Zion McCoy grabbed a team-best six boards.
Elizabethtown, which won its fourth in a row, shot 47% for the game and knocked down 10 of its 28 three-point attempts. The Blue Jays held a 54-28 rebounding advantage. The Gophers shot 20% overall and were 3-18 behind the arc.
Goucher is on the road Wednesday evening, traveling to No. 13 Catholic for a 6 pm Landmark Conference contest. The Gophers are back home on Saturday, January 27, entertaining ninth-ranked Scranton for a 4 pm tip at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
